I’ve heard from a lot of people that they don’t cook because they live alone.  They don’t feel the need to whip up a dinner for themselves, so they eat out a lot, or order pizza.  The kicker about that is the expense adds up quickly.  There are very easy way to make smaller portions that you can heat up quickly and eat.

A good dish to make for one is spaghetti.  Not only is it cheap, but it’s versatile and a whole pound can stretch over many days.  Now, for sauce, it comes in one big jar, and refrigerating it only is good for so long, because the acids in the pasta sauce will break down the sauce after it’s been exposed to air.  So, you need to freeze it.

The annoying thing about freezing spaghetti sauce is if you throw the whole jar in the freezer, it takes forever to thaw.  Well, there is an easy way to get around it, especially if you are cooking for one.  Read on for my frugal tip of the week!

This is very simple, and very cost effective.  What you will need, is a jar of your favorite pasta sauce, an un-used ice cube tray, and a freezer zip-lock bag.  You may need more than one tray.

Take the pasta sauce and spoon it into the ice cube reservoirs.  When the tray(s) are full, pop them into the freezer and let them sit overnight.

The next morning, get your frozen pasta sauce cubes out of the freezer and pop them out of the tray, put them in a freezer bag and store in your freezer.  To thaw, throw as many cubes as you need in a small sauce pan, and thaw down.  You could also nuke them, if it suits you.  When you are thawing the sauce, this is when you can add your favorite cheeses, pre-browned meats, or steamed veggies.  I’ve also seen this done with coffee.  Enjoy!
